Plant of the week
The Dendrobium is a close second to America's favorite orchid, namely the Phalaenopsis being no. 1. This lovely orchid comes in a large variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Making it not only a fave, but incredibly versatile too! As one can see, this is an orchid to love! And with much love comes great responsibility.
Which is why we took the liberty to give you step by step care basics to help your orchid grow!
Light: This orchid is much more tolerant with light than the others. It can withstand direct morning sun followed by an afternoon of dim. Best to keep it in a lit room though.
Water: Water about once a week: It's best to allow medium to almost dry between watering. Check the soil with your finger, don't fear getting dirty! It's very important to check for moisture. If there is, don't water!
And rule of thumb - DO NOT LET IT STAND IN WATER. If your orchid has a saucer, check it regularly. If there is any water in it at all, dump it immediately. Having an orchid stand in water will cause root rot and the whole plant will eventually die due to drowning.
Life Cycle: The blooms last about 6 weeks at a time.
What to do when blooms die? When the blooms are done, cut the sprays* just where they meet the canes*. Canes produce several sprays from the upper leaf axils* each year. Fertilize with high nitrogen fertilizer to support this rapid plant growth. Water weekly and use a balanced fertilizer (12-12-12) twice each month. Plant of the Week
Zygopetalum
The zygopetalum is an exotic species of orchid, grown in the remote regions of the South American rain forest. Its stunning, fragrant flowers make it a popular orchid to grow indoors. Though, due to it's hard to reach home, this beauty is not easily accessible. Which is why when this orchid graced our doors, we immediately decided to have it as our plant of the week!
Realitively, it is easy to care for. Good bright, indirect light and a nice drink should do the trick. Although, we figured it's best to have it broken down. Thanks to the real professionals at www.beautifulorchids.com they were able to make that possible. So here it is, step by step.
Temperature: Zygopetalum orchids will tolerate considerable summer heat as long as they have mild nighttime temperatures between 50-65 degrees F. Exposure to cold temperatures (down to 28 degrees F) for a few hours each night will not damage an acclimatized plant, but once the plant spikes or flowers, it should be protected from temperatures below 35 degrees F. Always keep these plants free from frost.
Light: Your Zygopetalum enjoys the morning and afternoon sun but should be protected from hot midday sunlight. A light green leaf with just a hint of yellow indicates that the plant is receiving the maximum amount of sun it can take; a dark green leaf indicates that it needs more sunlight.Water: Watering of Zygopetalum is a delicate balancing act. They should not be allowed to go dry, yet they don't care for a soggy environment either. Watering once every seven to ten days is about right. As with everything else, special consideration must be given for the drying effects of varying ambient air temperature and humidity.
Feeding: High nitrogen fertilizers (25-9-9) should be used from February until July, while low nitrogen fertilizers (6-25-25) should be used from August until January. Feed one teaspoon to a gallon of water once a month.
Repot: Repot every two to three years from February to June with a well-draining medium. Fine bark is suitable in mild summer climates, while a finer medium Orchid Mix works well in warmer summer areas.
This purple variation is the only one in our shop.
So you better hurry before it's gone!

Success Story!
Orchid Workshop Success Story
" The orchid workshop was one of my first plant experiences ever! Having a love for orchids over many years did not guarantee that they'd survive under my care. Poor things didn't stand a chance until that fateful day when I learned everything I needed to know to help my orchids thrive. I can stand proud and declare --- not only are my orchids living well, but they are actually showing signs of flowering stalks! I've never experienced this type of success!
Thank you Kifumi for sharing your vast knowledge and expertise of plants and orchid care." - NI
Remember, our Free orchid workshop is on Saturday, September 7th from 11 am - 12:30pm. Seats are filling! Call to reserve yours before they're gone!
Plant of the Week
The Brachycaulos is one of the more common species in the Tillandsia (air plant) family. Although it may be a usual specimen in the plant world, it stands a part from the rest for it's beautiful bloom. When it turns red, its ready bloom a most spectacular flower. It's blends in a bit in the photo, but located in the middle of the plant is a sprout coming through. With lots of light and love it surely will be a stunning piece in our shop.
We recommend tillandsias for their easy care and overall versatility. They are root-less. Meaning, no soil required! You can place them in any pot, glass, or container, as long as they are in good, bright in-direct light. Watering should take place once a week. Either soak them in water for 30 minutes or a give them good spray and that should do the trick.
Be sure to check out our pinterest page to see creative tillandsia arrangments and terrariums! There are endless possibilities with the Tillandsia!

Handcrafted Wood Bowl
Handcrafted Bowl
This wood bowl was handcrafted by an expert wood artist from the Sacramento area. Prevalent in 2006, this artist was very well known for his craftsmanship in taking the roots of trees and transforming them into breathtaking pieces of art. The bowl pictured is made from redwood burl, a rich deep burgundy wood with a bright toffee edge. The artist, apart from other carvers, used his skills to create a wavy appearance on the lip of the bowl. Which gives its defining feature of being one of the most unique bowls on the market.
The artist, as we're aware of, no longer creates these beauties - making this a one-of-a-kind.
This work of art is $950 and well worth the price!

Strangler Fig
(Ficus Aurea) Strangler fig, aka Love tree, embraces and strangles their host by wrapping their trunks around them. These trees grow in the dark forests and begin life as epiphytes (plants that grow on trees). It uses the host plant for support and as it grows it tends to kill the original tree.
This is a very unique and almost artistically grown Ficus Aurea. With it's intriguing history, it makes a captivating statement in any home -- not to mention a great conversation piece!

Plant of the Week
Plant of the Week: Ficus - Benjamina Variegated. (Weeping Fig)
Ficus Benjamina is one of the most popular houseplants that is grown specially for it's decorative shiny, green oval leaves, it can be prune to almost any shape and size, grown as an evergreen tree or large shrub in offices and used for interior landscaping. Cultivars are available with variegated foliage, wavy leaves and pendulous branches. Weeping fig stems are often trained in ornamental shapes, while the stems are young and flexible they may be braided, spiraled or twisted into different shapes.
They can grow as tall as the indoor space will allow, but they can easily be pruned to a suitable height and shape. These indoor trees are generally easy to grow if you give them enough light and proper care. Weeping figs grow best in a bright indirect or curtain-filtered sunlight position, but they will handle some direct sun if the humidity is high. Variegated cultivars grow best in somewhat lower light. Weeping figs prefer warm temperatures, in the night 18-21 Celsius degrees (65-70 F) and over the day 24-26 Celsius degrees (75-85 F) are ideal temperatures.
During periods of active growth, make sure you keep the soil evenly moist, but the soil should be allowed to dry slightly between watering during the winter and other times of low growth. Weeping figs should never be waterlogged or allowed to sit in water in their saucers because the roots will easily rot. They prefer high humidity, so wash your ficus leaves occasionally with plain warm water - this will help the leaves breathe and improved their appearance. Mist leaves frequently, especially in hot weather. Use tepid water for this operation.
Healthy plants should be fed every moth or two during the growing season, usine a liquid fertilizer. Weeping figs can tolerate being slightly root bound, but if the plants will become too crowded, the new leaves that appear will be small and the growth will slow. Re-pot your tree in late winter or early spring, using a general purpose potting soil. They will grow in most soils, but prefer the well-drained ones, and are drought-resistant once established.
Plants can be pruned to shape as needed. They will even tolerate hard pruning to reduce their size if necessary, but if you have to prune them so hard just remember to reduce watering levels to severely pruned plants.
The most common problem of weeping figs is leaf drop. They seem to react to almost any stress by shedding their leaves. Over-watering, under-watering, drafts, lack of nitrogen and low light can all be causes of leaf drop. They often shed leaves when moved to a new location or re-potted, but if growth conditions are adequate it will adapt to its new location and stop dropping leaves, then healthy new growth will appear.
You can propagate weeping figs at any season by air layering, or by cuttings that are best taken in summer and using a rooting hormone and provide bottom head. Sow seeds at 15-21 Celsius degrees (59-70 F) in spring.

Plant of the Week
Tillandsia Xerographica
The king of air plants, the xerograhpica tillandsia is by far the most exotic and stunning plant of it's kind. The plant is from some very remote areas in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Making it not only beautiful but rare to get as well.
The silvery green color with thick curly leaves sets it apart from the average plant. Of course, being an air plant, leaves endless ideas with placement and creativity.
See, air plants are very easy to care for because it doesn't need soil. It stands alone... ready to be used in cute arrangements, terrariums, frames and much much more.
All it needs is either a good soak in water for 30 minutes a week or good spritz of water weekly or more.
And, don't forget - bright INDIRECT light. What we mean is place this beauty in a bright room without direct sunlight. So basically don't place it under the suns painful rays. (Plants can get sunburned too.)
Though, at the same time, a room that doesn't stay bright or needs an abundance of artifical light to stay lit... this tillandsia wont like it too much. So bright indirect light is key.
Right now, we have a few in our shop. This beauties wont be around for long so be sure to stop by and snag one for yourself. And remember, we have the pick your discount... savings up to 50% off! Who can beat that?

We know, we know... succulents are too cute. And so is birch, actually. So we decided to collaborate the two. And can we just tell you... OMG... it turned out fabulous!
We added different shapes and colors of rugged succulents along with some spanish moss and threw them together in a woodsy birch container. And Viola! We created something beautiful!
Needless to say, we love these little guys! So much so we put together a little artsy collage to commemorate these little beauties (not to mention they were sold faster than we could say PLANTS). So we hope you enjoy them. They are exotic after all.

We're Branching Out!
Exotic Plants normally does indoor plants. Well, it's what we're known for. However, last week we get a call from a beloved client wanting an outdoor / court yard design. Okay. Challenge accepted!
This was during our summer rain. Needless to say, we now know why we prefer doing indoors. Things got wet! We're sure our plants loved it though.
So it turned out better than we hoped for. Our client loved it! Gave us so much praise. We felt great when we were done!! And thank goodness it was done. haha.
Alright, we wanted to toot our horn just a little. This was a big project... quite foreign for us. But for it being "outside" of what we normally do, all we can say is: we branched out! (pun intended)

Plant of the Week
The Variegated Ming Aralia
There's a handsome plant.
The Ming Aralia has been a plant favorite since the 70's and the popularity couldn't be growing faster.
As you can see, it's very unique and stunning. And being variegated, the leaves have swirls of green and white which create a stunning appearance.
This plant does need lots of good, indirect light with a nice drink once a week.
Keep in mind, Ming Aralias do grow up to 5 - 6 ft tall but very slowly. If you think it needs to be re-potted, consult a professional. They can be very temperamental and a move could set it over the edge.
Leave shedding is common, especially when moved into a dimmer area. Be sure to keep them in a bright location, as they will do much better there.
If you have any more questions about Ming Aralias and their care, please call us at 916.922.4769
