Merry Christmas!
We wish you a joyous Christmas filled with laughter and wonder and your dreams come true!
From Kifumi and Staff from Exotic Plants

What's so special about this plant?
Here's a plant that can actually help make your environment healthier! The Sansevieria, also known as a Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law's Tongue, releases oxygen into the air during the night making it a good plant for your bedroom. Plus studies have shown that it removes many toxins from the air such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.
Don't worry if your green thumb sometimes seems a little brown because Sansevieria can tolerate poor watering habits and can thrive in low light.

Shop Small Business Saturday
You probably have seen ads recently for Shop Small Business Saturday which is coming up on November 29th. They prompted me to find out more about the role that small businesses pay in our economic health.
Although I always knew small businesses are important for the well-being of our communities (After all Exotic Plants is a small business.), I didn't fully grasp just how important. An article on www.entrepreneur.com said that small businesses represent over 99% of all employers and provide 60% to 80% of the net new jobs annually.
Think what that means for our community and how we can improve it by supporting our local small businesses! And we don't have to wait for Shop Small Business Saturday!

What is it?
Some plants are so different that you almost have to stop and look at them. Like this staghorn fern. Its fronds resemble antlers and can grow three feet long. The plant is an epiphyte which means it grows on another plant but not as a parasite, only for mechanical support. It gets its nutrients from the rain, air, dust and so on. In nature, they are usually grow on trees but people often grow them on plaques or in baskets with some peat or other organic material under it.

What’s beautiful and looks like a big insect? And no, it isn't scary!
Say hello to the butterfly orchid, also known as as Oncidium Papilio (Psychopsis). Not only does this orchid have a striking similarity to a butterfly, if you look closely at the bloom, it appears to have a face!
Butterfly orchids are different from many other types of orchids in that they have one bloom per spike but when one falls off, another flower usually pops up right away. That’s because a future bud is forming behind the mature one.
These plants are easy to care for and love bright, filtered light.

Want to get more done?
Although studies over the years have concluded that plants
in the workplace will increase productivity, new research has the statistics to
prove it. When plants were added to
Spartan-type offices, productivity increased by 15%.
This new study was the first to test the idea in real
offices. It was conducted by researchers
from the University of Queensland, Cardiff University, the University of Exeter
and the University of Groningen.
According to Professor Alex Haslam – one of the study’s coauthors
– the study challenges modern business ideas that a lean office is a more
productive one. He was quoted in the UQ News as saying, “Modern offices and desks have been
stripped back to create sparse spaces - our findings question this widespread
theory that less is more – sometimes less is just less.”

Living on air!
Remember when you were a child and everything seemed so new and amazing? I feel that way about air plants. A plant that grows in air AND is beautiful!
Tillandsia (the official name) come in many varieties and sizes and are very easy to care for. Simply submerge them in water for 10 minutes once a week and give them medium light. They look great displayed on pebbles, in shells, branches or driftwood -- let your imagination take over!

Orchids - did you know?
Did you know that although many people think orchids are tropical plants, you can find them growing on just about every continent -- except Antarctica. They come in an amazing variety of sizes. The smallest are no bigger than a thimble while one type can grow to 20 feet tall!
Here is one of our mini-orchids, about 10 inches including the pot. We even have one under 7 inches. That will fit just about anywhere!

Which plant is the best to have indoors?
The Sansevieria
The Sansevieria is an ideal plant for indoor spaces because it is a superb air purifier. Studies, including those performed by NASA, have consistently shown the plant to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and nitrogen oxides—which means that industries and workspaces such as automotive plants and shops, aircraft plants, plywood, carpeting, paint makers and sellers, printing, and offices, where these chemicals abound in the products produced and used, would greatly benefit by keeping several Sansevieria around. NASA, whose study purposed to determine how to clean the air in space stations, recommends at least 15 to 18 medium-to-large size plants for a 1,800 square-foot home.
The plant purifies air by absorbing toxins through the leaves and producing pure oxygen. In fact, the Sansevieria is an ideal bedroom plant. Whereas most other plants release carbon dioxide at night (in the absence of photosynthesis), the Sansevieria continues to produce oxygen.

Terrariums
It seems that all over the place, left, right and center, people are coming up with DIY everything.
The most popular out of the mishmash is terrariums. Little plants in cute containers, whether hung or grounded, are growing popularity faster than you can say "weeds"! They get pretty creative too - plants from succulents to the tiniest ferns and blooms! Although with all of those self-help, do-it-your-self, 5 steps blah blah blah, to make your own terrarium can be pretty confusing for which one to go to. For that matter, most of those DIY out there are giving you their design! Wouldn't it be much better having the ability to create your own - from scratch!?
Well that's what we were thinking. Which is why Kifumi Keppler, owner of Exotic Plants will be hosting her very first DIY Terrarium Workshop. We believe that creativity is the most important thing to have. Hence, we have developed this workshop to instill yours! To create the most fun plant trend of 2014!
Large varieties of containers, rocks, sand, and the most adorable plants are waiting for you to learn the skills and build your very own one-of-a-kind terrarium!
The best part of it is that it's FREE. Seats are limited though, so be sure to call asap to reserve yours before they're gone!
